The insect respiratory system uses a system of internal tubes and sacs through which gases either diffuse or are actively pumped, delivering oxygen directly to tissues that need it via their trachea. Because oxygen is delivered directly to tissues via tracheoles, the circulatory system is not used to carry oxygen and is therefore greatly reduced. The insect circulatory system is open; it has no veins or arteries, insects may have one to hundreds of Malpighian tubules. These tubules remove nitrogenous wastes from the hemolymph of the insect and regulate osmotic balance. Wastes and solutes are emptied directly into the alimentary canal, at the junction between the midgut and hindgut.
