Solution

The correct option is A 3, 4, and 7
  • Fibre P is a cellulosic fibre or plant fibre that is obtained from the fruit. Cotton and kapok are the two cellulosic fibres that are obtained from the fruit. Jute is a cellulosic fibre obtained from a stem. So fibre P could be either cotton or kapok. Hence, statement 1 is incorrect.
  • Animal fibres are also called proteinaceous fibres because they are made of proteins. Wool and silk are examples of proteinaceous fibre. So fibre Q can be either silk or wool. Silk is known for its smoothness and lustre and it is the strongest animal fibre. Since fibre Q is a proteinaceous fibre with smoothness, lustre and strength, it must be silk. Therefore, statement 2 is incorrect because fibre Q is silk, not wool.
  • Fibre R is a petrochemical-based fibre. Synthetic fibres such as nylon, polyester and acrylic are obtained from petrochemicals. Hence, fibre Q could be either polyester, acrylic or nylon. Therefore, statement 3 is correct.
  • Plant or cellulosic fibres, on burning, give an odour similar to that of burning paper. Since fibre P is a plant fibre, therefore, statement 4 is correct.
  • Animal fibres, on burning, give an odour similar to that of burning hair whereas synthetic fibres such as polyester, on burning, give an odour similar to that of burning plastic. Since fibre Q is silk, an animal fibre, so on burning, it should give an odour similar to that of burning hair. Therefore, statement 5 is incorrect.
  • Since fibre R is polyester, a synthetic fibre, therefore, on burning, it should give an odour similar to that of burning plastic. Hence, statement 6 is not correct.
  • Natural fibres, that is, plant and animal fibres, absorb more water than synthetic fibres. Since, fibre P and fibre Q are natural fibres and fibre R is a synthetic fibre, therefore, fibre P and Q absorb more moisture than fibre R. Hence, statement 7 is correct.
  • So, only statements 3, 4 and 7 are correct. Therefore, the correct option is A.
