Calcination involves heating the ores strongly in the absence of air, above its melting point.


Calcination is a process in which concentrated ore is heated in a suitable furnace, generally much below its melting point in the limited supply of air or oxygen, which makes the ore porous and hydrated salts lose their water of Crystallization. During this process the impurities of Sulphur and Arsenic are volatilized away as oxides and thus pores are formed in ores.

Roasting is a similar process in which, a sulphide ore is heated strongly in the presence of air at a temperature below the fusion temperature of the ore. Usually the suphide ore is converted to an oxide. Again, the impurities of Sulphur and Arsenic are volatilized away as oxides and thus pores are formed in ores.
