The first transgenic cow, Rosie, was engineered such that the human α-lactalbumin gene was introduced into it. This gene was expressed in its mammary tissues and made its milk enriched with human α-lactalbumin protein.

With a human protein content of 2.4 g/L, this milk was nutritionally more balanced than the milk produced from the normal cows. This milk was produced for the first time in the year 1997 (and not 2001).
