All plants have a life cycle that alternates between a diploid sporophytic and a haploid gametophytic phase. In several organisms belonging to fungi, algae and bryophytes the gametophyte is dominant and thus the plant body seen more commonly in haploid. In these haplontic organisms, gametes are produced by simple mitotic division. On the other hand, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms, that is the the higher plants, have a dominant sporophytic phase and hence the plant body is diploid. Here the gametes are produced by meiosis. In both scenarios, the gametes produced are necessarily haploid.
