Lichens cannot grow in $S{O}_2$ polluted areas. In lichens, the algal partner (phycobiont) obtains water and minerals from the fungus and the fungal partner (mycobiont) obtains food prepared by the alga. So in this case, it is an example of mutualism as both the organisms are getting benefit of this interaction.

Lichens are sensitive to atmospheric pollution such as Sulphur (SO2) because they receive all their nutrients and water from wet and dry atmospheric deposition (fall out). So they cannot grow easily in SO2 polluted areas.
