Pancreatic juice produced by the pancreas contains three enzymes - trypsin, amylase and lipase. Each of these enzymes help in the breakdown of different substrates and release products into the bloodstream which is taken up by the cells. The enzyme trypsin is present as trypsinogen (the inactive form) in the pancreas because the active trypsin would cause severe damage to the pancreas. Trypsinogen gets converted to active trypsin upon entering the small intestine through the common bile duct. Trypsin breaks down dietary protein chains into peptides, pancreatic amylase acts on starch and breaks it down into maltose and the pancreatic lipase breaks fats into glycerol and fatty acids.
