Ramalinga Swamigal did not have any formal education but he gained knowledge, and emphasised on the bonds of responsibility and compassion between living beings. Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga Satya Sanga, the Society for Pure Truth in Universal self-hood, was established in 1865 by Ramalinga Swamgal. He had radical views which deeply disturbed the Saiva orthodoxy group. They condemned his writings as Marutpa, meaning songs of ignorance.
