Ayyankali was a reformer born in 1863 at Venganoor in Thiruvananthapuram. He became a leader of an anti-caste organisation known as Sadhu Jana Paripalana Sangham. He raised funds to educate the lower caste Pulaya people. To challenge the ‘ban’ on untouchables from accessing public roads used by upper-caste Hindus he protested by riding an ox-cart on the roads.
