Self-incompatibility is a genetic mechanism that prevents inbreeding.

In self-incompatibility, the pollen grains from the same flower or different flowers of the same plant are considered incompatible by the stigma. The self pollen is considered incompatible by the flower.

Hence the pollen grains fail to germinate and there is no pollen tube formation.

This phenomenon is known as self-incompatibility which prevents the self-pollen from fertilising the ovules and thereby self-pollination is prevented.
