Semipermeable membrane allows the passage of solvent through it. However it does not allows the passage of solute molecules. Hence, semipermeable membrane is used during osmosis and reverse osmosis process. For example, desalination of water requires use of semipermeable membrane. Examples of semipermeable membrane include cellulose, cellulose nitrate and animal bladder.
