Question

Separate the vector and scalar quantities from the following: distance, velocity, displacement, and speed.

Open in App
Solution

Vector quantities:

  1. Quantities that have both a direction and a magnitude are called vector quantities.
  2. Acceleration and force are two examples of it.
  3. As velocity and displacement both are expressed with their magnitude and direction, they are vector quantities.

Scalar quantities:

  1. Quantities with only magnitude are referred to as scalar.
  2. For example, the amount of time and speed are the scalar quantity.
  3. As distance and speed are only expressed with the magnitude, both are scalar quantities.

Therefore, distance and speed are scalar quantities while velocity and displacement are vector quantities.
