Question

Seven rods A,B,C,D,E,F and G are joined as shown in figure .all the rods have equal cross-sectional area A and length l. the thermal conductivities of the rods are KA=KC=K0,KB=KD=2K0,KE=3K0,Kp=4K0andKG=5K0. the rod E is kept at a constant temperature T1 and the rod G is kept at a constant temperatures T2(T2>T1) (a) show that the rod F has a uniform temperature T=(T1+2T2)/3.(b) find the rate of heat flowing from the source which maintains the temperatures T2?

Solution

The Temp at both ends of bar F is the same
rate of heat flow to right = rate of heat flow through left
(Q/t)A+(Q/t)c=(Q/t)b+(Q/t)D

KA(T1T)AI+Kc(T1T)AI=KB(TT2)AI+KD(TT2)AI
2K0(T1T)=2×2K0(TT2)
T1T=2T2T2

T=T1+2T23
(b) As F have the same temp. at both the ends, it acts like wheatstone bridge(no heat flows through F)

RA and RB are in series,RC and RD are in series

Equivalent thermal resistance is
R=(RA+RB)(RC+RD)(RA+RB+RC+RD)
(thermal resistance =IKA)
By putting the values of RA,RB,RC,RD
R=3l4K0A

q=ΔTR

q=(T1T2)4k0A3l
