Sponges are similar to other animals as they are multicellular, they lack cell walls, and produce sperm cells. They lack true tissues and organs and have no body symmetry. Their body shape is adapted for efficient water flow through their central cavity. Though sponges have simple, internal skeletons, they lack the ability to move. The great majority of sponges are salt water species.
Most of the known species feed on bacteria and other food particles in the water, but some host micro-organisms in a symbiotic relationship. A few species of sponge are carnivores.
