Write a note on the morphology of a human spermatozoon.

1. Head -
  • Head of human sperm is derived from the nucleus.
  • It contains mainly DNA.
  • It is covered by a cap-like structure termed as an acrosome.
2. The Neck -
  • The neck is narrow. It contains a funnel shaped basal body and a spherical centriole.
  • Basal body is also called as the connecting piece because it helps to establish a union between the head and the remaining part of the spermatozoon.
3. Middle piece -
  • It consists of the mitochondrial spiral, which provides the energy to the sperm to move ahead into the fallopian tube.
4. Tail -
  • The tail is covered by a fibrous sheath.
  • It is 55 µm in length.
