Most fungi resemble protists or even plants. What is the justification for placing fungi in a separate kingdom?

  • Fungi were once considered plants because they grow out of the soil and have a rigid cell wall. Now they are placed independently in their own kingdom because of the absence of photosynthetic pigment and the saprophytic/parasitic mode of nutrition.
