Oxygenation of blood promotes the release of CO2 from the blood in lungs. Explain.

Solution

The release of CO2 at the level of lungs can be explained by the Haldane effect. It describes hemoglobin’s ability to carry increased amounts of CO2 in the deoxygenated state as opposed to the oxygenated state. Oxygenation of blood in the lungs displaces carbon dioxide from hemoglobin which increases the removal of carbon dioxide.
