Inhalation:
- The process of taking in air, rich in oxygen is called inhalation.
- It is also known as inspiration.
- When you breathe in, or inhale, your diaphragm contracts (tightens) and moves downward.
- This increases the space in your chest cavity, into which your lungs expand.
- The intercostal muscles between your ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity.
- They contract to pull your rib cage both upward and outward when you inhale.
- As your lungs expand, the air pressure inside the lungs decreases and the air is sucked in through your nose or mouth.
- The air then travels down your windpipe and into your lungs. After passing through your bronchial tubes, the air finally reaches and enters the alveoli (air sacs).
