The human rib cage is made of 12 pairs of ribs. The ribs are attached to the sternum on the ventral side and the vertebral column on the dorsal side. Based on their attachment with the sternum and vertebral column the ribs are classified as true ribs (attached both to the sternum and vertebral column
) that include rib pairs 1 to 7, false ribs (attached to the vertebral column but not to the sternum, ribs pairs 8, 9 and 10) they articulate with each and with the seventh pair with the help of cartilage on the ventral side. Floating fibs are only attached to the vertebral column, these are the eleventh and twelfth pair of ribs. The ribcage protects the vital organs namely the heart and the lungs.
