India has two narrow strips of coastal plains, the Western and Eastern coastal plains. They have been formed by the deposit of sediments by the peninsular rivers as well as through the erosional activities of the sea.
The Western coastal plain is 10 to 15 km wide and is divided into four parts---Kathiawar coast (Gujarat coast), Konkan coast (Maharstra coast), Canara coast (Karnataka coast) and Malabar coast (Kerala coast).
The Eastern coastal plain is 50 to 60 km wide. It is called the Coromandel coast in Tamil Nadu and Northern Circar in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal. The eastern coast has large river deltas like the Sunderbans.
