Solution

Dear Student,

Gandhi felt that Muslims had real grievances and that a combined movement by Hindus and Muslims would bring the two communities together into the freedom struggle. Thus, he brought them into the forefront through non cooperation movement.

a. The Khilafat Movement was launched as a measure of protest against the treatment meted out to Ottoman Turkey by the imperial powers.
b. This had its implication in the political situation in India as the
Khilafat Committee was formed in Bombay in March 1919 to defend the powers of the caliph. Muslim leaders Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali were at the forefront of this agitation that was eventually incorporated with the non-cooperation movement by Gandhi who saw this as an opportunity to unite Hindus and Muslims.
c. Likewise, we saw participation of Muslims in the civil disobedience movement. Abdul Ghaffar Khan led the movement in the North West part of India.
d. However,
Civil disobedience movement basically witnessed lukewarm response from Muslim organisation because:
e. A large section of Muslims felt alienated from the congress. As the congress had come to be associated with Hindu religious nationalist groups like the Hindu Maha–Sabha, Muslims found them detached from the organization.
f.There were frequent communal clashes between the communities that created an atmosphere of suspicion and distrust between the two communities.Differences also arose over the question of separate electorates for Muslims to safeguard their interests.
g. Many Muslim leaders and intellectuals expressed their concern about the status of Muslim minority in India
