Solution

Step 1: Conversion of Ethyne to Ethene

  1. Ethyne on heating with Hydrogen in presence of Nickel catalyst forms Ethene.
  2. The chemical reaction occurs as follows:
    C2H2(g)(Ethyne)+H2(g)(Hydrogen)NiC2H4(g)(Ethene)

Step 2: Conversion of Ethene to Ethane

  1. Ethene further on heating with Hydrogen in presence of Nickel catalyst at 150°C gives Ethane.
  2. The chemical reaction occurs as follows:
    C2H4(g)(Ethene)+H2(g)(Hydrogen)150°CNiC2H6(g)(Ethane)

Step 3: Overall reaction

C2H2(g)(Ethyne)+H2(g)(Hydrogen)NiC2H4(g)(Ethene)+H2NiC2H6(g)(Ethane)
