Question

Show that 42 is an irrational number.

Open in App
Solution

Let us assume that 42 is a rational number.

42 = pq, where p and q are the integers and q 0.

2 = p4q

Since, p, q and 4 are integers. So, p4q is a rational number.

2 is also a rational number.

but this contradicts the fact that 2 is an irrational number.

This contradiction has arisen due to the wrong assumption that 42 is a rational number.

Hence, 42 is an irrational number.
