Question

Show That 7 + 7 is an irrational number.

Open in App
Solution

Let us assume that 7+7 is a rational number, so that 7+7 =ab, where a and b are co-prime integers (b0).
So,
7+7=abor, 7=ab-7or, 7=a-7bbSince a and b are integers, a-7bb is a rational number. So, 7 is a rational nummber. But this contradicts the fact that 7 is an irrational number. This contradiction arsies because of our wrong assumption that 7+7 is a rational number.Hence, our assumption is wrong. So, 7+7 is an irrational number.
