Question

Show that for any sets A and B, A = (A ∩ B) ∪ (A – B) and A ∪ (B – A) = (A ∪ B)

Open in App
Solution

Let’s assume,

A={ 1,2 }(1)

B={ 2,3 }

AB={ 2 }

AB=A( AB ) ={ 1,2 }{ 2 } ={ 1 }

( AB )( AB )={ 2 }{ 1 } ={ 1,2 } (2)

From equations (1) and (2),

A=( AB )( AB )

Hence,

A=( AB )( AB )

BA=B( AB ) ={ 2,3 }{ 2 } ={ 3 }

A( BA )={ 1,2 }{ 3 } ={ 1,2,3 } (3)

( AB )={ 1,2,3 }(4)

From equations (3) and (4),

A( BA )=( AB )

Hence,

A( BA )=( AB )
