Question

Show that the maximum enzyme catalysed reaction rate will occur for [H+]opt=k1k2.

Open in App
Solution

[H+]opt=k1k2
The general pH control enzyme catalysed reaction is
EH2+2EH+E
Only EH+ is
capable for binding substrate and catalysing the desired reaction;
k1=[EH+][H+][EH2+2];k2=[E][H+][EH+]
[ Hint: k1k2=[E][H+]2[EH2+2]
In pH control it may be considered that [E][EH2+2], i.e., enzyme combines almost completely with H+ ions.
Thus, k1k2[H+]2;[H+]=k1k2 ]
