Show that the points (3, 4), (−5, 16) and (5, 1) are collinear.

Let the given points be A(3, 4), B(−5, 16) and C(5, 1).

Now,

AB=-5i^+16j^-3i^+4j^=-8i^+12j^

AC=5i^+j^-3i^+4j^=2i^-3j^

Clearly, AB=-4AC

Therefore, AB and AC are parallel vectors. But, A is a common point of AB and AC.

Hence, the given points (3, 4), (−5, 16) and (5, 1) are collinear.
