Germination:

  1. The condition is which embryo inside the seed loses dormancy and develops into a new plant is called germination.
  2. The process of germination from seed occurs in multiple steps.

Step 1: Swelling of seed:

  1. The seed absorbs water and swells up which ultimately bursts the seed coat.
  2. The bursting of the seed coat exposes the embryo towards the outside.

Step 2: Development of root:

The radicle of the embryo extends inside the soil towards the ground forming the root of the new plant.

Step 3: Development of stem:

  1. The plumule of the embryo extends upwards developing the shoot or stem of the new plant.
  2. The cotyledons of the plant form the new leaves of the shoot.
