Solution

Atomic number of magnesium is 12 and its electronic distribution is 2, 8, 2. Whereas atomic number of oxygen is 8 and its electronic distribution is 2, 6.

Therefore, in order to completely fill the octet oxygen will gain two electrons from magnesium. Thus, there will be formation of ionic bond between magnesium and oxygen.
