Metals -

Elements that have an excess of electrons and a tendency to donate them are generally considered metals. For example - Sodium(Na), Silver(Ag), etc.

Properties of metals are as follows -

  • Metals are malleable and ductile.
  • Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • Generally, metals are found in solid-state (except - Mercury, Gallium which is liquids) at room temperature.
  • Metals are strong (except sodium and potassium metals which are not strong).
  • Metals are sonorous.

Uses of metals -

Uses of Lead -

  1. It is used to cover underground electric and telephone cables.
  2. It is also used as a coolant in nuclear reactors.
  3. It is used in making car batteries.

Uses of Silver -

  1. It is a precious metal that is used in making coins and jewellery.
  2. It is also used in making dental fillings, in the form of silver amalgam.
  3. It has some usage in photography as well, in the form of Silver nitrate(AgNO3) and Silver bromide(AgBr).

Uses of Aluminium

  1. Aluminium is used in making alloys like duralumin and magnalium. These alloys are used in the construction of aircraft and automobile bodies.
  2. Due to the low density of Aluminium, it is used in making foils used for making packaging foods.
