Solution

Food chain:

  1. The food chain shows that the plants are the ultimate producer.
  2. Only the plant is able to preapare food itself and rest of the organisms are directly or indirectly dependent on plants .
  3. A food chain is a linear network of links in a food web starting from producer organisms and ending at an apex predator species, detritivores, or decomposer species.
  4. A food chain also shows how organisms are related to each other by the food they eat. Each level of a food chain represents a different trophic level.

Example:

  1. So, from the figure above we can clearly see the energy which flows through the trophic level is initially released from the producer which is a plant.
  2. plant stores solar energy by photosynthesis and when a herbivore (primary consumer) eats the plant as food the energy is transferred to that organism.
  3. Then secondary consumers eat the primary consumer and the energy is further transferred.
  4. In this way, the energy is transferred from the plant to the ultimate consumer.
  5. So it's absolutely clear that plants are the ultimate source of food.
