The liquid drop model gives an intuition about the nuclear fission process, though not exactly true.
It all starts with an unstable parent nucleus. (Diag. a)
Since unstable it has high energy. Due to high energy the nucleons start vibrating which starts causing the shape to deform and it starts becoming stretched. Further vibrations, creates a necking and formation of two lobes.(Diag. b)
Once the lobes are formed since we can see that both the lobes are positively charged, the electrostatic repulsion finally breaks it apart into two individual fragments. (Diag. c)
