Sickle cell anaemia is an autosomal genetic disorder of red blood cells (RBCs) in which RBCs take up a sickle shape. Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin Beta gene found on chromosome 11. This defect is the result of substitution of the amino acid glutamic acid by valine at the sixth position of the beta-chain of haemoglobin molecule (Hb).
