Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder of the red blood cells (RBCs). In this disease, instead of having normal disc shape, RBCs have an abnormal crescent shape which looks like a sickle. Hemoglobin is present in red blood cells that carries oxygen. It has two α chains and two β chains. The sixth position in the second β chain has glutamic acid which is replaced with valine in sickle β chain. This occurs due to the gene modification which results in two abnormal copies of the haemoglobin gene.
Thus, the correct answer is option C.
