Question

Silanes get easily hydrolysed whereas alkanes do not. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

This is due to the availability of vacant d-atomic orbitals in silicon that silicon easily accept the H2O molecule, while carbon due to non-availability of vacant d-atomic orbitals cannot be hydrolysed.

Hence silanes get easily hydrolysed whereas alkanes do not.
