Godfrey's rejection of Molly had led her down the path of drugs. She was miserable, though she knew it was the drugs that was making her miserable. She wanted revenge on Godfrey for abandoning her and had decided to walk to the red house to expose Godfrey, on the day when he would be the most happiest. But she was not able to do this because, on the way to Godfrey's house she ingested what may have been, a lethal dose of opium. Soon after taking the opium, she died.
