Question

Silver is monovalent and has an atomic mass of 108. Copper is divalent and has an atomic mass of 63.6. The same electric current is passed, for the same length of time through a silver coulometer and a copper coulometer. If 27.0 g of silver is deposited, then the corresponding amount of copper deposited is:
[Enter the nearest integer value]

Solution

Given,
Atomic mass of silver =180g

mass of silver =27.0g

Equivalent weight of silver =1801=108g

Atomic mass of copper =63.6, mass of copper =?

Equivalent weight of copper =63.62=31.8

From Faraday's law of electrolysis-

massofcopperdepositedequivalentweightofcopper=massofsilverdeposiedequivalentweightofsilver

mass of copper deposited =Eq.wtofcu×massofsilverEq.wtofAg

=31.8×27.0108=7.958g
