The correct option is B $4$
$a (a^{2} + a + 1) + 5$
$= a^{3} + a^{2} + a + 5$
Putting the value of $a$ ,we get,
$a^{3} + a^{2} + a + 5$
$= (- 1^{3}) + (- 1)^{2} + (- 1) + 5$
$= (- 1 \times - 1 \times - 1) + (- 1 \times - 1) + (- 1) + 5$
$= - 1 + 1 - 1 + 5$
$= 4$
