Solution

If x is an irrational number then x^2 can be rational or irrational number.

Let the irrational number be x = √3.

Then x^2 = (√3)^2 = 3 which is a rational number.

If x = √3 - 1 then

x2 = (√3 - 1)^2 = (√3)^2 + (1)^2 - 2√3 = 4 - 2√3 which is again an irrational number.
