Question

Site exploration was done and it was found a thin layer of loamy soil exists at a depth of 8 m below the surface of the ground. Water table is located at a depth of 2 m below ground level and with the help of undisturbed sampling following data were obtained.
Cu=22kN/m2 C=15kN/m2
ϕu=15 ϕ= 25
If the shear stress develops very slowly, the shear resistance of loamy soil on horizontal plane is_____ (kPa).
(Assume γd=18kN/m3, wsat=15% γw=9.81kN/m3)

Solution

The correct option is A 62.26

γsat=γd(1+w)

=18×(1+0.15)

=20.7kN/m3

γ=γsatγw=10.89kN/m3

When shear stress develops very slowly, effective stress analysis should be done

S=C+σtanϕ,

σ=γd×2+γ×6m

σ=18×2+10.89×6=101.34kN/m2

S=15+101.34×tan25= 62.26kN/m2
