villiform specialisation of cell membrane of bacteria that develops as an
ingrowth from the plasma membrane. It consists of vesicles, tubules and
lamellae. Mesosome is of two types- septal and lateral. Lateral mesosome
contains respiratory enzymes and is, therefore, often called chondrioid. It is
believed to be equal to mitochondrian of eukaryotes.
