Site of bacterial respiration is mesosome. Mesosome is a characteristic circular to villiform specialisation of cell membrane of bacteria that develops as an ingrowth from the plasma membrane. It consists of vesicles, tubules and lamellae. Mesosome is of two types- septal and lateral. Lateral mesosome contains respiratory enzymes and is, therefore, often called chondrioid. It is believed to be equal to mitochondrian of eukaryotes.
