Solution

Step :1 Assuming the ages of father and son by variables xandy

Let be x be the age of father and y be the present age of son.

Step :2 Prepare a table

Present age

6 years after

Father

x

x-6

x+6

Son

y

y-6

y+6

Step: 3 Applying the condition,

According to the question,

Case :1

x-6=3(y-6)ā‡’x-6=3y-18ā‡’x-3y=6-18ā‡’x-3y=-12..................................(1)

Case :2

x+6=2(y+6)ā‡’x+6=2y+12ā‡’x-2y=12-6ā‡’x-2y=6.....................(2)

step: 4 Solving for x and y using elimination method

(1)-(2)ā‡’-y=-18ā‡’y=18

To find x ,

Substitutey=18in(1)

(1)ā‡’x=3y-12=3(18)-12=54-12ā‡’x=42

Therefore present age of father is 42 years and that of the son is 18years
