Slow conversion of plants and animals into coal is called carbonisation. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

The process is called carbonisation because over thousands of years, under high temperature and high pressure and by the action of anaerobic bacteria, the dead palnts and animals are decomposed and hydrogen and oxygen is removed from them by slow conversion process. Thus carbon is left behind over thousands of years, and it leads to formation of coal. Coal is mainly composed of carbon.
