He asks the shopkeeper to reduce the price of the article to such an extent that he does not have to pay anything more than Rs. 2,240 including Sales Tax. Calculate the reduction, as percent, needed in the marked price of the article.

Let the cost of the article be reduced to Rs. x.

According to question,
Cost price+Sales tax=Rs.2240
x+12% of x=2,240
x+12100×x=2240
112x100=2240
x=2240×100112
x=2,000

Reduced price of the article =Rs.2,000
Reduction needed =Rs.2,200Rs.2,000=Rs.200
Hence, reduction as percent of marked-price =ReductionMarked price×100%
=2002,200×100% =9111%
