SnCl4 is liquid while SnCl2 is solid. Explain.

1.According to Fajan's rule, cation should have large size compared to anion to form strong ionic compound.

2.Cation in SnCl2 is Sn+2 and in SnCl4 cation is Sn+4. The size of Sn+2 is larger than Sn+4so, SnCl2 forms an ionic bond.

3.In SnCl2, there exists strong electrostatic forces due to which it exist as solid and in SnCl4 there exists weak attractive forces due to which it exist as liquid.

Hence, SnCl4is liquid while SnCl2 is solid.
