Question

SO23 and SO24 both give white precipitate with BaCl2 solution. Scheme to detect SO23 in presence of SO24 is given below. If true enter 1, if false enter 0.
BaSO4 is insoluble in conc. HCl while BaSO4 remains soluble. Separate BaSO4 and add Br2 water into filtrate. SO23 is oxidised to SO24 and gives white precipitate of BaSO4.

Solution

BaSO4 is insoluble in conc. HCl, while BaSO3 remains soluble.
Separate BaSO4 and add Br2 water into filtrate which contains BaSO3.
SO23 oxidized to SO24 (with oxygen generated by the reaction of bromine with water) and gives white precipitate of BaSO4.
Thus, sulphite can be detected in presence of sulphate.
Br2+H2O2HBr+O
BaSO3+OBaSO4
