Solution

Reaction summary

Sodium hydroxide NaOH reacts with Sulfuric acid H2SO4 to form Sodium sulfate Na2SO4 and water H2O. The reaction is known as the neutralization reaction.

Skeleton reaction

NaOHaq+H2SO4aqNa2SO4aq+H2Ol

  • There are 2 sodium Na atoms on the product side, while on the reactant side, there is only 1. To balance sodium atoms, a coefficient of 2 must be added in front of NaOH.
  • The number of hydrogen H atoms on both sides of the reaction is not equal. Thus, to balance hydrogen atoms, a coefficient of 2 must be added in front of H2O. Through this, all the atoms in the reaction become balanced.

Balanced chemical equation

2NaOHaq+H2SO4aqNa2SO4aq+2H2Ol
