Question

Sodium (Na), Magnesium (Mg), Aluminium (Al) and Silicon (Si) are arranged in the decreasing order of their atomic size. Which element has the highest ionisation energy among them? Justify your answer scientifically.

Solution

Silicon (Si) has the highest ionization energy. In a period, on moving from left to right, the ionization energy increases. Electrons are added to the same principal shell. Nuclear charge (atomic number) increases, the added electrons shields each other poorly from the nucleus. Effective nuclear charge increases and atomic radii decreases and ionization enthalpy increases along a period.
