  • Soil is arranged in distinct layers; each layer differs from the other based on its physical characteristics, colour, and texture.
  • Total arrangement of these layers is called a soil profile.
  • Each layer is called a horizon.
The soil profile is as follows:
  • Topsoil: Consists of organic matter and decomposed animal remains. Rich in nutrients and good for crops.
  • Organic Layer: Also known as the humus layer, the layer where plants grow.
  • Subsoil: Contains clay and has rich deposits of minerals.
  • Regolith: Consists of broken-up particles of the parent rock.
  • Parent Rock: Unweathered rock that decides the soil type.
