Solution

Alluvial soils are usually very productive soils but may be deficient in nitrogen, humus and phosphorus. Generally, alluvial soils range from near neutral to slightly alkaline in reaction. A wide variety of crops is grown in these soils.
If the soil is fertile, then the population starts to settle there as they want fertile soil for cultivation. There is a direct correlation between the fertility of land and the population it can support. Hence, it is usually observed that areas with fertile soil are more densely populated. On the other hand, if the soil is infertile one, then less or no cultivation is possible there. Such areas are scarcely populated. So the fertility of soil affects the distribution of the population.
